An error occurs while installation (and probably uninstallation) of the Symantec Norton Ghost,
“Unable to determine type of existing ghost installation. You need to manually uninstall the existing version of Ghost before installing the new version.”
This happens when one or more folder or registry keys of Symantec Norton Ghost hasn’t been deleted on the system.
A quick solution would be manually deletion of the folders/registry keys associated with Norton Ghost.
Steps / Instructions on How to resolve the issue on Unable to determine location/type of the existing Ghost installation
1. Go to the system root directory, (example would be your installation or system root is C:\ Drive), go to C:\Program Files\Symantec\, from there find the Directory “Ghost” or “Norton Ghost” or “Symantec Ghost”. Then after you locate it, delete it manually.
2. Finding the registry keys is the hard part, but with the right point, would be easily, this a challenging one.
Using Windows XP, click Start (or press Window key in keyboard), then click Run, from there, type regedit.
Using Windows 7, click Start-Window Logo (or press Window key in keyboard) ), then from Search type bar, type regedit.
3. At the registry, click Computer, then at file menu, click Edit then click Find. Type the corresponding key associated with Norton Ghost, the most relevant key would be “Norton Ghost” or “Ghost”.
Note: Only do this if you are aware on registry edit, otherwise don’t proceed this process, as for the expert.
Pinpoint necessary folder/keys, see the file path and also the extensions, do not delete a key if you just saw a word Ghost or GhostSlave.
4. After you delete certain folder keys, restart your computer. Then try to install the newly Symantec Norton Ghost.
I hope this helps you out. Cheers!
