Install and configure HPLIP – HP Linux Printer Device – HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-one Printer in Linux Ubuntu Debian

(Note: For this event you may need an internet connection, in case of need to install or download available updates on your Ubuntu OS.)

(Note: For GNOME GUI, I’m not certain on other GUI Environment such as Unity, 😀 , you may try if you want, to see the results.)

Here’s the Steps / Instructions on How to Install and Configure to HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-one Printer in Ubuntu:

1. If you used Ubuntu Software Center to install HPLIP driver (skip the process or steps from 2 to 8). Go to Applications, then click Ubuntu Software Center. From there, search the keyword: HPLIP, then it will show the HP Linux Printing and Imaging System. Click it, and click Install. Wait until it finish.

(Note: It will ask for administration password, just the type the password to proceed)

OR

Download the appropriate driver. Double-click or open your Web Browser(Firefox, Google Chrome, IE, etc..) then at the url, type http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html

Click Download HPLIP.

2. Check what Linux OS you have. Select Distribution (example: Ubuntu is your Linux Distro). Select Version (see what version you have, example : 10.10). Select Printer Type (example would be: Photosmart/Photosmart Pro), then Select Printer Model (example would be: HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-one Printer).

Then click Next.

(Note: If you still don’t have any idea on Linux Distro, Version or even Kernel, click here to find out what Linux Distribution and Version you have)

3. Summary of the Driver, click Next.

Then click again Next.

4. Then click Download HPLIP to start the download. From here on this page, there is a instructions on how to install it. (You can follow the instructions here too)

Wait until it finish the download. Then open the containing folder to see the file.

5. Open the Terminal, drag the file going in the terminal. It will give you a path like this, ‘/home/apserver4/Downloads/hplip-3.11.12.run’. (as for the example)

You can complete the following command. Press the home button at your keyboard, to make the cursor back at the beginning, then type sudo sh (put the space between the command and path of the installer.

The whole command would be like this:
sudo sh ‘/home/apserver4/Downloads/hplip-3.11.12.run’

Press Enter then it will ask for administration password, just the type the password to proceed on the installation then Press Enter.

6. It will ask you the Distro/OS Confirmation, if it’s correct then type Y otherwise N.

7. This quite complicated, well it will ask you to enable the universe/multiverse repositories. Make sure you are using “Main” repositories. To check it, at your Ubuntu Desktop, click on System then Administration then click on Update Manager. From there, click on Settings

(Note: It will ask for administration password, just the type the password to proceed)

Click the Ubuntu Software Tab, then check if the Canonical-supported Open Source software (main) is click and check, same as on Community-maintained Open Source software (universe) and Software restricted by copyright or legal issues (multiverse). Otherwise click and check it, then Download from Main Server is selected. Then click Close.

If any changes made, an update process proceeds. Just wait until it finish to download and make changes on the updates. Then close it afterwards.

8. As for the pending installation of printer driver, continue it by press Enter key.

Then next instruction follows, if using USB, unplug and re-plug it in your computer, or either restart your computer. If using via network/wireless, just ignore and continue it.

As presented option you be, r-restart, p-re-plug, i-ignore/continue, q-quit. Press the corresponding choice that applies to you.

9. Wait until the HP Device Manager – Device Discovery appears.

(Note: In this example, I used the Network/Ethernet, same application on USB and wireless, with minor differences.)

Select appropriate Connection I/O Type. Then click Next.

Then select the Discovered Device. Then click Next.

10. Then lastly, Setup Device. Then click Add Printer. (Don’t worry about the fields, its all automatic field up for you. If you want a better name for the Printer, Just change the Printer Name and Fax Name only. From there you have your printer installed.

(Note: You can also install HPLIP Toolbox from the Ubuntu Software Center for quick access of the device)

To find the printer that is installed, go to System, Administration then click on Printing. From there, you will see the installed HP Printer on your computer.
